In this article, we’ll explore VoLTE in Nigeria, explaining what it is, which networks support it, and which phones are available that support the technology.
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is also known as HD Voice or 4G Calling. It is an Internet-based technology that will eventually replace the traditional voice service currently in use.
When was VoLTE Introduced?
In 2016, VoLTE was first introduced in Nigeria. This technology is an addition to 4G LTE that allows subscribers to make high-quality phone calls over the 4G LTE network. Does the fact that this service runs on 4G LTE imply that all 4G phones support VoLTE? No, not at all. To make VOLTE calls, your 4G smartphone must be equipped with the necessary technology.
Who launched VoLTE in Nigeria first?
Ntel and Smile Communications are competing, as both launched VoLTE services in February 2016. Smile Communications launched its VoLTE service the same month. On January 18, 2016, Ntel claims to have made the first HD Voice call. Smile Communications does not appear to have disputed it. What about MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile, the big four network operators?
MTN is the only one of the Big Four operators with the capacity to provide VoLTE service.
Is VoLTE supported by MTN Nigeria?
Yes, MTN Nigeria launched its Voice over Long-Term Evolution (VoLTE) call service in April 2022, six years after the technology was first introduced in the country. The Y’ello company’s public relations machine claims that it is the first of its kind to be introduced in Nigeria, but this is not true. Ntel and Smile, as previously stated, have both provided Voice over LTE services for many years.
Because Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile do not yet support Voice over LTE technology, you will have to wait if you are a customer of one of them. For the time being, if you want to enjoy VoLTE in Nigeria, you must dance with ntel, Smile, or MTN.
Smile, in fact, had launched and sold their VoLTE smartphone since the middle of 2020. It is a low-cost dual-SIM phone. It is available at Smile stores across the country. When MTN announced its Voice over LTE service, it stated that it only supported a few smartphones at the time. Phantom X, Infinix Zero X, and Infinix Zero X Pro are among them. Certainly, MTN will support more VoLTE phones in the future.
